Skills

Young children should be given opportunities to express their own original ideas and explore a range of materials, skills and techniques. There are key skills in art that can be taught and built upon and these skills will enable children to express themselves using a visual language.

I create schemes of work that introduce and revisit the formal elements of form, shape, colour, line, texture, tone and pattern whilst also exposing children to new materials, skills and techniques. Year after year children gain confidence and proficiency in many practical aspects of art. The practical skills can be broadly broken up into drawing, painting, printing, sculpting and collage.

When this making approach is combined with the meaning approach to art curricula, children receive a great depth of subject specific understanding and a high quality, well-rounded art education.
